For the past two years the International Gay Polo League has been breaking barriers and creating awareness with its International Gay Polo Tournament. The tradition will continue by doubling up on the fun with this year’s tournament on Saturday at the Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington.
“The Gay Polo League is happy that they have been able to make an impact in the community dealing with social issues and human rights,” said Carrie Wirth of Phelps Media Group, which produces the event.
This year the fun has expanded, making it more accessible to everyone. Last year the tailgating was such a hit that this year spots will be available on both sides of the field.
“We are, of course, bring back the tailgating competition [which has judges pick the best themed tailgate],” Wirth said. “Spots are selling at a brisk rate, so act quickly to get the best spot.”
Tailgate spots cost $175 and include eight general admission tickets and choice of prime spot.
Also new this year is duel VIP tents that will be on both sides of the field and open to all guests. Anyone can come in, enjoy a drink, some fine cuisine and a bit of shade, Wirth said.
The tournament will kick off with opening ceremonies at 1 p.m. and conclude with an awards presentation at 5 p.m. This year’s after party is sponsored by the Wellington Rotary Club once again.
The partying kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at Wellington‘s newest hot spot Graffito South, 3410 Equestrian Club Road. Guests will dine on an Italian buffet and down a few drinks at the open bar. To get everyone dancing the party will feature DJ Adam West – Mr. South Beach. The cost is $50 per person. Call Maggie Zeller with the Rotary at 561-715-9292 for tickets.
Based on the reaction to last year’s after party, this year’s looks to be an even better time, said Larry Kemp with the Wellington Rotary Club, adding that this is a great way for guests to party with the polo players.
The Hampton Inn will be the official hotel for the International Gay Polo Tournament.
“We are so excited to be the official hotel for the tournament,” general manager Robert Colletti said in a press release.
This year’s sponsors are Polo Gear USA; Christian Thomas Construction, Kontiki, Palm Beach Rox, The Rotary Club of Wellington and South Florida Gay News.
