MDNA, Madonna’s 12th studio album, has seen a huge decline in sales since it debuted at number one on the Billboard Charts in late March. Forbes is reporting a record 88 percent week-over-week drop, from 379,000 copies to a paltry 46,000. Madonna was doing just fine beating Lionel Richie’s Tuskegee for the top spot but the way MDNA got the title was quite interesting. The Huffington Post reports that though Richie’s album was outpacing Madonna in her projected sales, Madge was business savvy and decided to give her release away to anyone who bought a ticket to her tour. Those sales were counted in Billboard’s tally and Madonna ended up surpassing Tuskegee.
It all went downhill from there. Tickets to her shows were either sold out or nearly sold out which meant no albums were purchased. In his music blog, Bob Lefsetz dissed the pop icon for failing to understand Superbowl shows do not translate to album sales, especially for “an ancient superstar dashing for cash. ” The halftime show, Lefsetz expressed, was “Oldsters just wanting to hear the hits, and youngsters…just don’t care.” He felt her tour was “like a going out of business sale” for it was “charging a fortune and playing huge venues.”
With critics, such as Lefsetz, loosing faith in the Material Girl’s career, several of her friends are supporting her and not giving up hope. Madonna’s longtime publicist, Liz Rosenberg, told The Huffington Post‘s Rob Shuter the following:
“Can’t deny that there [was] a drop on the second week of sales, and a significant one, but I would not say the CD tanked. It still has had the highest debut of 2012 and was number one in many countries. And the game ain’t over.”
Adds another friend:
“This is Madonna’s 12th album in a 30-year career. She just beat Elvis’ record for number ones in the UK. That’s a career that anyone in the music business would kill to have. Plus, she
