Gay comic book superheroes have been created before, to more or less success. DC Comics is also planning to switch it up a bit by outing an established character, it has emerged. Twitter is on fire with speculation on who that might be.
Just recently, DC Comics announced that it would be adding new characters to which members of the LGBT community could relate. It’s now recanting on that, to say an older character will be outed instead, BleedingCool informs.
Co-publisher Dan DiDio says that DC Comics’ policy on orientation has changed and that they would be making one of its already existing characters gay: he or she will be “one of our most prominent gay characters,” DiDio insists.
“As Senior VP Sales Bob Wayne explained, just like the President of the United States, the co-publisher’s policy on this ‘has evolved’,” BleedingCool writes.
For the time being, DC Comics remains mum on the identity of the hero, refusing even to say whether it will be male or female.
This means that curious, intrigued and upset (yes, there are of those, too) are taking to Twitter to play the guessing game and throw arrows in the dark.
As WebProNews points out, after summing up what people are saying, it would seem that the “crowd favorites” right now are either Wonder Woman or Robin.
However, other names, like those of The Joker, Superman or Batman, have also been thrown around.
Either way, there’s no denying that the topic is a hot one. While open-minded fans applaud DC Comics’ decision to include the LGBT community in its stories, others are none too happy, saying there’s no reason to do so – the “if it ain’t broke, why fix it” argument seems to work well for them.
“DC’s suggestion that the character will be an established one is sure to draw some ire from old school fans and homophobes alike,” WPN points out.
We might add that it’s already happening.
