MEGA Underground Thursday: “Major” by The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, Lush & Lively, and Jonathan Warman’s musical DNA

I’ve been a bad boy, abandoning Underground Thursday for a couple of weeks. So I’m coming back with a bang, starting with “Major”, a knockout song from soulful indie pop band The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, plus a bunch more of my favorite all-time indie (and not so indie) videos. Also, tomorrow night, Friday, July 29, I will be DJing at the Lush & Lively cocktail hour at the Time Out New York Lounge at New World Stages 340 West 50th Street (between 8th & 9th Ave) from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The music emphasizes horns and strings, so there will be jazz (classic and “nu”), latin, international orchestral and big band pop  and – of course – lots and lots of disco. The Cosmo special is only $3 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and there are $5 drink specials until 9:00 PM.

A whole bunch of videos after the jump.

Here’s “Major” (and it is):

A song I love so much it’s practically my theme song, “Lay My Love” by Brian Eno & John Cale:

On the same level is Saint Etienne’s reinvention of Gary Numan’s “Stormtrooper in Drag”, with one of the most stunning, abstract YouTube videos EVER — this sums up my visual and musical sensibility in one sprawling package:

Another favorite, “John Cage Bubblegum” by Stereolab; love John Cage, love bubblegum rock, love Stereolab!

R.E.M., led by queer trailblazer Michael Stipe, and the epic “Discoverer”:

Punk is key for me and “Turn on the Light” by Bad Religion is about as good as it gets:

David Bowie a huge influence, and “The Voyeur of Utter Destruction (As Beauty)” is his experimental best:

And my roots (ahem) also include the fantastic, sexy post-punk performance artist Fad Gadget
