The Carolina Theatre presents the 17th Annual North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (NCGLFF) as they continue their tradition to showcase films produced in United States and from around the world like Canada, Australia, UK, South Africa, Germany, Brazil, Israel, Sweden, Denmark and Iran. The film festival “reflect the many voices of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community,” according to NCGLFF’s mission and “celebrates a worldwide glimpse of today’s gay and lesbian life, helps bring the community together, and features entertaining and sophisticated films and filmmaking.”
For ten days, starting on August 10th through 19th, the films provide ample opportunities to connect and experience real-life stories and insights of people’s lives and dealing with controversial and social issues, struggles, prejudice, and like people all over the world, trying to find meaning in life and searching for happiness, acceptance, and love. Through the power of cinematic platforms and bottom-line good stories mixed with comedy and drama, some films may unveil the misunderstandings of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. As the saying goes, whether it is “at the end of the day” or end of the movie, these and other untold stories with similar context may offer new perspectives, understanding, and embed lessons to respect all people when we experience them firsthand.
There are other special events throughout downtown Durham this year. Carolina Theatre President and CEO, Bob Nocek said, “When we made the decision more than a year ago to expand the festival to ten days, we knew that making it work would require more than just additional film screenings. It was our intent to reach beyond the walls of the Carolina Theatre and to move NCGLFF into Downtown Durham in a variety of ways.” A special performance by comedian Kathy Griffin will be the kick off event on Friday, August 10th at the Durham Performing Arts Center.
The 2012 festival will present 28 feature films, three documentary features, three
