A man has been arrested in Brazil after he tried to open a bank account using forged ID with a photo of Oscar-winning actor Jack Nicholson.

Ricardo Sergio Freire de Barros, 41, was picked up by police in the northeastern city of Recife and charged with using false documents and forgery.

He also was carrying identification documents belonging to other people.

A copy of the forged document released by police shows a photo of Nicholson’s face next to the signature of “Joao Pedro dos Santos” and a fingerprint.

“The document with the photo of the actor and other false identification were used to start a fictitious company – and with it also open a bank account,” said Erivaldo Guerra, who is leading the civil police investigation.

“That way, he would use the limits on the cheques and the credit cards to steal money.”

Police said Freire de Barros was already being investigated for fraudulent activity when he was arrested.

Nicholson, 74, won Oscars for One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), Terms Of Endearment (1983) and As Good As It Gets (1997).

He also achieved critical acclaim for his portrayal of The Joker in Batman.

Lying Egyptian MP Quits Over Nose Job Scandal

Posted by on Tuesday, 6 March, 2012

Egyptian politician Anwar al Balkimy
Anwar al Balkimy claimed he was attacked by thieves who tried to steal his car

12:53pm UK, Tuesday March 06, 2012

Anwar al Balkimy was recently pictured with his face covered in such heavy bandaging that only his eyes, mouth and bearded chin could be seen.

His party Al Nour said it had questioned him about the ‘attack’ and found his claims were not true and he had subsequently quit parliament.

Party spokesman Nader Bakar added: “He may be suffering from an emotional disorder.”

Al Nour is the most conservative Islamist party in Egypt, and its members follow a strict interpretation of Islam forbidding cosmetic surgery as it interferes in God’s work.

Mr Bakar said: “Based on what the hospital officials said, we decided to expel him from the party, and so he submitted his resignation.

“We are trying to bring forth a new set of social values in politics based on Islamic principles.”

He added that Mr Al Balkimy had apologised.

Mr Al Balkimy reportedly checked into a Cairo hospital on February 28 for plastic surgery on his nose.

And the next day he checked into a second hospital, where doctors said he tried to claim he had been beaten and mugged.

He told police he was attacked during an attempt to steal his car while he was driving on the outskirts of the capital.

The politician also claimed his attackers robbed him of more than $16,000 (£10,000).

His false claims led to an outcry against the government for failing to address a crime wave that has been plaguing Egypt since last year’s uprising ousted president Hosni Mubarak.

3-year-old girl recovering after swallowing 37 high-powered magnets | The Sideshow

3-year-old girl recovering after swallowing 37 high-powered magnets | The SideshowAn X-ray shows the ring of 37 magnets swallowed by Payton Bushnell (KPTV)

A 3-year-old with curious eating habits is recovering after swallowing 37 high-powered magnets. KPTV reports that after she ate them, the magnets formed a dangerous ring inside Payton Bushnell’s digestive track, snapping her intestines together and ripping holes in both her small intestine and stomach.

“They saw a circle had formed in her stomach, and they thought she swallowed a bracelet,” Payton’s mother, Kelli Bushnell, told the station.

A recent report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says there have been 22 cases of children swallowing magnets since 2009. And the New York Times reported that while swallowing a single magnet rarely poses problems, swallowing even just two can prove fatal. The Canadian government explains on one of its health information sites that once someone has swallowed more than one magnet, the magnets can literally travel through the intestines until they link up. Along the way, they can create dangerous blockages and even slowly tear through the intestinal walls themselves.

Needless to say, Payton Bushnell survived, thanks to her doctors at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel. She’s expected to make a full recovery.

“Her mom and I prayed and hoped she’d get through it,” Payton’s father, Aaron Bushnell, told KPTV. “It’s a miracle she is doing as well as she is.”

The Centers for Disease Control says accidental injuries are the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4, beating out disease, birth defects, infections and other illnesses combined. Interestingly, accidents continue to be our biggest threat until about age 24.

Payton’s parents will almost certainly be keeping a closer eye on their hungry daughter, who they tell KPTV has a habit of eating inanimate objects. They say they are speaking out to help warn other parents about the risks of keeping magnets around small children.

In this video from 2006, a man reportedly swallows a magnet, then traces its path through his digestive tract, using a penny.

Escaped penguin outracing Tokyo authorities in bid for freedom | The Sideshow

Escaped penguin outracing Tokyo authorities in bid for freedom | The SideshowThe escaped penguin, last seen near Tokyo Bay (Photo: Tokyo Sea Life Park)A determined, young penguin has escaped captivity by reportedly circumventing the walls of the Tokyo Sea Life Park and was last spotted swimming in Tokyo Bay, near the Japanese capital.

“We first noticed the penguin might have fled when the director of a neighboring zoo e-mailed us Sunday with a photo,” park official Takashi Sugino told the AFP.

The 1-year-old Humboldt penguin was spotted by the zoo director, where it was bathing in the mouth of the Kyu-Edo river. The zookeeper then snapped a picture of the penguin, who almost appears to be waving to the camera, and sent it to officials at the Tokyo Sea Life Park.

The BBC reports that park officials have had no luck bringing the missing penguin back home. They say the runaway Humboldt travels “at a tremendous speed,” making him elusive to park officials. They have been unable to track down the penguin since he was last seen in the photo.

“Since then, we don’t have any specific information about the penguin’s whereabouts,” Takashi Sugino, an official of Tokyo Sea Life Park, told the Japan Times.

Park officials still aren’t exactly sure how the young penguin, part of a 134 penguin litter born at the park last year, escaped. The park’s aquarium is enclosed by a six foot (2 meter) net they say would be impossible for the penguin to climb over. However, the Japan Times reports that the net has holes in it sometimes used by cats and other animals.

For now, officials have given up trying to beat the penguin with speed.

“It’s a bit of a struggle to catch it when it is swimming, because it swims at a tremendous speed,” zoo official Takashi Sugino told the AFP. “We are hoping to catch it when it climbs up on land to sleep.”

California judge says backyard boat must shove off

Posted by on Monday, 5 March, 2012

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California man who’s been restoring a 72-foot antique boat in his yard has been ordered to move the vessel.

The Los Angeles Times reports a judge issued a preliminary injunction last week saying 65-year-old Dennis Holland must move the boat before a trial to determine its long-term fate begins April 30.

Holland may face fines of $1,000 a day if he doesn’t move it, which he tells the Times ( http://lat.ms/wHGuhS ) is impossible at this stage.

He has been restoring the 1916 ketch called the Shawnee in his Newport Beach yard since 2006 and had a permit to do it, but it expired last year when he refused to give a completion date.

The City Council then voted to pursue legal action.

Police: Pa. man tries high-fiving cop who gave DUI

Posted by on Monday, 5 March, 2012

TYRONE, Pa. (AP) — Police say a central Pennsylvania man thanked and tried to high-five the officer who flagged him down for driving without his lights – only to then be arrested on a drunken driving charge.

The Altoona Mirror ( http://bit.ly/zQItVl ) reports that Gerald Decker was driving early Feb. 19 when a Tyrone officer noticed that Decker’s car didn’t have its lights on and flagged him down.

Officer Adam Bonsell says Decker told him, “Thanks, buddy,” and tried to high-five him. Bonsell told him, “That’s not how it works” and gave Decker field sobriety tests.

Police say Decker’s blood-alcohol content was 2 1/2 times the legal limit for drivers.

The charges were recently mailed to Decker.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for the 27-year-old Decker of Tyrone. His phone number isn’t listed.
